After the confirmation of the first case of Covid-19 in Brazil, several uncertainties about the future came up. Could it really infect a high number of people? What should be done from then on?
Within a few weeks, various segments of society had already been affected, and companies and educational organizations had adopted sanitary measures for prevention. One of such measures is social distancing, also known as quarantine. Only companies deemed essential for society remained open to cater to the basic needs of the population.
This change has caused unprecedented impacts. Companies and educational organizations have been hit in their face to face activities. Above all, face to face academic and corporate education has changed: on-line learning has become a widely adopted reality for making education possible.
Impacts on operations
Covid-19 emerged in late 2019 in Wuhan, in the Chinese countryside. The disease is transmitted by physical proximity. Many believed the virus wouldn’t cross the planet and come all the way to Brazil. However, it arrived much faster than expected. Silently, the both the number of infected persons and the death rate rose. That forced people to adopt more strict hygiene and prevention measures.
Social distancing is the measure with the greatest impact. It has forced companies and educational organizations to innovate and look for ways to adapt to the new routine of working from home. Companies have begun to operate via home office, with meetings taking place via videoconferencing. Educational organizations at all levels have adopted on-line education strategies.
Corporate on-line education
Even before Covid-19, on-line learning was growing as a methodology at an accelerated pace, both in academic and corporate education. With social distancing, this approach has been consolidated as the main choice in all segments of education.
On-line education allows training to be fully digital and remotely executed with plenty of flexibility. Employees – mostly any learner – can interact with each other and with contents on a virtual environment. That leads to higher rates of engagement, sharing, and learning.
To overcome the current crisis, organizations must be willing to move forward with corporate education by integrating technology into their training processes. On-line education is a way to build a learning path with several advantages. It enables companies to train their employees with greater flexibility: in any place, at any time, with any device. In other words, people can combine learning and their daily tasks, since one of the steps in the adoption of on-line education is the creation of an education plan that suits employees’ professional activities, profiles and positions.
Therefore, the use of digital technologies in education allows organizations to contribute to society in a more positive way, to encourage the on-line experience of their students and employees and adapt more and more to on-line education.
